For kinky-coily hair, accessories can do wonders. Here are my favorite must-have accessories that every natural should have on deck.
1. Big Elastic Hair Tie
Because of my thick, coily textured hair, using a regular elastic hair band does not work for me. It tends to be too tight (I’m tender-headed) and makes my hair look teeny-weeny small. Instead, I make my own hair tie using an old stretchy shirt — a hack I learned from a hair client of mine. I simply cut a piece from the sleeve and tie it around my head. This creates a big pineapple puff at the top of my head which makes it look fuller and thicker.
2. Hair Bands
I love to accessorize my hair with glamorous, glitzy hair bands that are decked with rhinestones. These are great to wear on a night out or even a day at the office. The best thing about wearing hair bands is that you can dress up any old hairstyle with them. An old wash n’ go? No problem. Slap a hairband on that baby and call it a wonderful day!

3. Edge Control
Ok, technically, edge control does not count as an accessory, but as a heavy-duty edge-slayer, it is a must-have for any natural seeking a sleek look. Though I do not use edge control everyday, I do tend to slick some on when I’m going out or for special occasions. A sleek look goes a long way for high ponies or classy buns.

4. Flowers, Flowers, Flowers

If you thought putting flowers in your hair is just a thing to do on vacay in Hawaii, get your head out of the sand. Flowers are a perfect way to jazz up your curls. Whether you wear them as a band or wear a single flower (fresh or faux) pinned to the side of your head, they make for great hair accessories.

5. Bobby Pins Galore
Need I say more? Bobby pins are a must for any updo hairstyle or for taming flyaways. Stock these by the 100-pack load because as easy as they are to love, they are easy to lose.

6. Hair Scarves
Worn for centuries, the big, bad hair scarf is one of the best hair accessories around and I don’t mean simply satin or at bedtime. Headscarves can be worn as turbans, tied around as a band, or hanging low as decorative pieces. Any way you wear a scarf, be sure to glam up a bit with a little make up or earrings to make sure everyone knows you’re not getting ready for bed or to clean the house!
