3 Dog-Friendly Beaches near Los Angeles

Los Angeles – Every local dog parent ought to take their pup to the beach at least once. There are three beaches within a 1-hour driving distance for Angelinos who own dogs. Bring a large bottle of cold water and a plastic bowl for your dog.

Some locals get away with stowing a chiwawa in their beach bag in Venice or running along the bike path with a bulldog in Playa Vista. However, all of the beaches in the City of Los Angeles officially prohibit dogs.

Every dog parent in Los Angeles ought to take their pup to the beach at least once. There are three beaches within a 1-hour driving distance for Angelinos who own dogs. At a dog beach, there are generally no fences and your dog can get excited by the sounds and sights of wildlife, so be prepared. I like to wear a sunhat so that my dog can see me from a distance. Bring a large bottle of cold water and a plastic bowl for your dog.

Dog-Friendly Beaches in Los Angeles County

Rosie’s Dog Beach (1 Argonne Avenue) is the best (and the only) off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County. The 4-acre coastline in Belmont Shore Beach can get pretty busy, but there are ample lots and free parking spaces along Ocean Boulevard. There are also volleyball courts, concession stands, and public restrooms. A paved bike path meanders through Granada Beach. Bags and pooper scoops are available (but bring your own). Nearby, you’ll find The Paw Spa, which offers a self-wash station to wash your dog after he chases the waves and digs sand dunes.

About 30 miles north of Santa Monica on PCH, you’ll find Leo Carrillo State Park where dogs are allowed on the beach north of Lifeguard Tower 3. Dogs are allowed to roam as long as they’re leashed.

This rocky beach is not the best for sunbathing. Rather, walk along the shore for a chance to see ocean and wildlife. On my most recent trip, I saw dolphins jumping half a mile offshore. I suggest wearing a pair of water shoes to protect your feet from the rocks. Street parking is free and meters cost $3 per hour.

Further north, Staircase Beach (40000 CA-1, Malibu, CA 90265) is considered one of the most beautiful in Malibu because of the steep cliffs, large rocks, and beautiful sand which remains largely undisturbed by crowds. The distance and cumbersome “staircase” path keep people away, but your dog is welcome.

Huntington Dog Beach (100 Goldenwest Street) is an off-leash dog beach that has less space from the parking lot to the shore than Rosie’s Dog Beach. But families can find plenty of room to set up an umbrella along the mile and a half stretch of California coast. Refreshment and restroom facilities are limited here. While there are accessible parking lots, it can be difficult to find a spot during the weekend and holiday rush hours, so plan accordingly.
